You can put something you already typed inside a function. Type 1, press , type 7, press , and type 6: $\displaystyle 1+\frac{7}{6}$. We want the radical of that fraction. Move the cursor in front of the fraction: press , , , and once more. Press and , which is INS, and then . The fraction is now under the radical.
